INTERMITTENT FASTING and the Aging Woman

Are you a women who is between the ages of 40 and 55+ who is has struggled with the HIGHS and LOWS of dieting? Have you reached a point in your life where you feel like no matter what you try the weight is not coming off and you just aren’t feeling like yourself anymore? Are you feeling like this is as good as it is going to get for you?

Reality Check Time:

√ As a 50 year old mother of two young kids (16 and 10) I don't have time to feel, look or act old. Whatever old is these days. I just don't have time for it.

√My body started falling apart on me.

•sudden weight gain
•hormonal body fat
•mood swings
•insomnia
•foggy brain
•you name it…. you are probably dealing with it right now.

The Tried and True DIETS that I had been following in my youth no longer worked for me. I couldn't just CUT CALORIES and CLEAN UP MY NUTRITION and have things magically fall back into place.

The real clincher for me was when I was diagnosed as a PRE-DIABETIC and I started showing all the symptoms of a FAILING THYROID. Add in sudden food intolerances, and before you know it, as much as you are trying to fight it, you are feeling, looking and acting old. Despite your best efforts.

—————————————————-

In 2015, I started researching Intermittent Fasting but I just couldn't connect to all the 20 and 30 somethings that were in Social Media showcasing their version of Intermittent Fasting. Starving all day and partying all night, just wasn't my thing anymore, maybe 30 years ago.

But I was very interested in the idea of Intermittent Fasting because of how this younger generation was benefiting from that concept of FASTING. I mean FASTING has been around for years and years.

So I stayed off Social Media and turned to medical books and published research on Intermittent Fasting. Much to my surprise there were so many health and Anti-Aging benefits to Intermittent Fasting that I never knew about.

In 2016, I made a promise to myself.
That promise was to use my time and energy to educate myself about the aging process and healthy ways to deal with it. Instead of spending money on co-pays and prescriptions I bought books. Instead of spending hours in doctor's offices I decided to research, educate and implement.

  • Your videos are great and it’s wonderful to see a middle age woman, like myself, that practices intermittent fasting.  I’ve been doing this for years and it’s helped me as I transition into menopause and it helps me keep my girl-ish figure.  Keep these informative videos coming!!

    • Thanks for stopping by…I hope you SUBbed to my channel. I am happy to hear IF is helping you. I love that the word is getting out.

    • Dy Ann Parham I would like to know that also. I am 49 and entering menopause. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and I started IF three weeks ago. Mainly doing 20:4 to 23:1. I feel better already.

    • michellemajako I am in the middle of my menopause, now 56 years young with a 20, 18 and 12 year old boy and before I started my Keto and IF I had regular hot flushes. They sort of stopped the day after I started. My weight hasn‘t changed much, but I have lost cms. It definitely makes me want to continue on this path!

  • thanks for sharing, in my first day i felt really bad acid reflux. Any suggestions or remedies for problems with producing excess acid?

  • My body is 59 this May. I am the healthiest I have ever been. I am 5’4″ and 124 lbs. I have been Keto the last 16 months with intermittent fasting daily. My Dr calls me uneventful because I have no issues.

    • Jainie, thank you for sharing that. Uneventful….not sure how I would feel about that. I am sure you are probably your doctor’s easiest patient. Congratulations. You have won! Thanks for stopping by.

    • This is very inspirational. How much did you weigh at your heaviest and how old were you? Just want to know if there’s hope for me lol. 😉

    • fukthegoog a vegan here, doing IF and low carb. No need to hateful and low carb intermittent fasting is wonderful on a vegan lifestyle

  • if you listen to Dr. Jason Fung, the Canadian doctor who specializes in obesity, and who discovered intermittent fasting for his patients and made this a popular idea that could be useful to the irfinsry person, you indeed only enter this phase after 24 to 36 hours, not 12 hours.

    • Yes, that you for sharing that….fasting is a process….getting to that 24 to 36 hours is key for most….but can be daunting for some. Working your way there is key.

    • Christine, Dr. Fung’s information is enlightening. I learned about it from Dr. Fung. On the flip side, this lady isn’t selling anything, and doing the 12 hr. intermittent fasting every 4 days has been amazing, and I’ve had amazing results. And, as she and Dr. Fung say, consult your own doctor before you do something radical. And they both say, MAKE IT WORK FOR YOUR lifestyle. I find this lady very encouraging, easy to listen too, and I’m glad she’s making videos. So, in a nutshell, 24 to 36 hour fasts are supposed to be better, but 99% of people CAN’T do them. THIS is easier. Anybody can do a 12 hr. fast. Hardly anybody can do a radical jump into a 3-5 day or longer fast. Both are equally benificial. The 12 hr. fast is a ‘lifestyle change’ that can be done overnight with 8 hours sleep and an, Oh, I get to eat at 10am. Your 24-36 hour claim is NOT a fact. Go back and listen to Dr. Fung. A person can jump start into Keto within a week by doing a couple of days of intermittent fasting on day 3 and day 6. Dr. Fung, MD and Dr. Michael Morley, and that Dr. V somebody, who works at UCLA, they’ve dedicated themselves to helping, but they’re also getting rich from it. Who cares. It ALL works. It’s about what works for the individual.

    • rightto opinion thank you! And most people who are just “winging” it are failing at fasting and frustrated. Do YOU it why I try to teach people. Thank you for your time and insight. 💐

  • I’ve been doing the 16/8 for a week now. Took me 3 weeks to get here…had to work towards it gradually, but I did it! Today, I’m trying the 24 hr fast for the first time.

    • Wow, that is a jump. Allow yourself some wiggle room. If you can’t get to that 24 hour mark…just getting unstuck from 16 is a great start. Work your way into it. And remember PROGRESS beats PERFECTION every time.
      Keep me posted.

  • ive watched a boatload of ur videos and u are super cute and very helpful! cant thankyou enough. i know my life has been changed after just 9days of intermittent fasting! its what my body wants! thanku again n keep up the good work

  • I’m already worrying about my health and aging process. Although I’m 19 and look even younger. 😀
IF, HIIT, Keto, qualitative sleep, mediation and whole organic foods are everything!

    • I love short hair on woman ( shoulder length ) I love it when they cover it for daddy 💕🍉💚🍏😍

  • Hi..thank you .. this is so interesting . Can you please tell me how many days a week you do the intermittent fasting and how many hours do you fast for when you do?

  • She says a lot of opinions as truth. If you get into the science of this, it is clear that nobody know for sure how long it takes to get into autophagy, and it varies by person as well. We are just at the very beginning of understanding the science of autophagy. So don’t buy into anybody’s absolute opinions of “you need at least 36 hours”, or “you only need 12 hours”. Fasting is good. Until we know more, do it however it works for you.

    • Cindi Anderson wow, thanks for reinforcing what I believe. I appreciate you taking the time to leave your comment. Always do You!

    • The best explanation I’ve seen is that you enter max autophagy when your blood ketones are higher than your blood glucose. I measured that and entered autophagy only after 3.5 days of water only fasting. If you start with low blood sugar and are already in Ketosis, it would take less time but to get into max autophagy, in my case, would take at least 3 days of eating absolutely nothing except water. There is zero chance that would happen after 12 hours.

    • as far as fasting goes, we know for sure how long you need to trigger real autophagy. . it is 3-5 days of water fasting, when you pass the ketosis crisis if you will state. This is when the “fasting flu” symptoms go away.
The rest is a replacement, semi-measure without any guarantee of the same result. Yes OMAD (23 hr fasting 1 hr eating) will work for weight management, it is proven. But is it as good as long term fasting ? of course not. For rejuvenation and healing that alone would not be as effective as long fasts.

    • @Fred Bouwman exactly! At least 3 days and sometimes 5 in some people, and I am afraid one needs to cleanse bowel first or it will take even longer to get into ketosis. Dry fast speeds that up though.

  • Hi Dy,
Also,….without “over doing it”….especially for women….look into the fact that most American women are low (men too) in Iodine and Iodide. Enough said….live and learn, and pass on the
info, to put medicine out of business.

  • I am new to your videos and am only halfway into this video and am a fan. How refreshing to listen to a mature woman sharing and explaining so lucidly on this subject. Although you are much younger than I am, at 69 I can identify more with what you are sharing than some Instagram obsessed chicky babe or muscle bound young man. I am about 3 weeks into the keto lifestyle and doing intermittant fasting and have done 2 24 hr fasts. I am so surprised that it is rather easy for me – who never felt like breakfast anyway. In my youth I used to have to be careful because of hypoglycemia and eat something every 3-4 hours. I am simply amazed that not eating until a late lunch (16-18 hr fast) on the keto way of eating never, ever caused the hypoglycemic symptoms. THAT alone convinced me this was finally the right path for me. I never bought into the low fat nonsense anyway. Here in Europe, good healthy fats are part of the various cultures. Thank you for your work!

  • It is 2019 now and there is still disagreement on how many hours of fasting is needed for autophagy to kick in. But it probably is a minimum of 24 hours.

  • The hardest part about IF is the mental game. You statement about “hungry is where the magic happens” just gave me the motivation I needed! Thank you!
