Senior & Beginner Workout – Slow and Gentle Barre

Tighten and tone your way through this muscle lengthening workout! Barre uses low impact movements at high repetitions. Some exercises are ballet inspired, but there is no dance experience required!

Make this workout your own; the deeper you bend your knees and the higher you lift your legs, the more challenging it will be.

Grab a sturdy chair and a light set of hand weights/dumbbells 1-4 pounds

I recommend no shoes for a barre workout. It’s good to feel and work the muscles in your feet for balance. Socks are fine, but please make sure they have sticky bottoms if you are on a hard wood floor or slippery surface.

  • Great workout! I love your subtle background music and your calm, positive manner. Definitely a great way for me to start the new year. Thank you!

  • If you liked this video, check out this one! It’s titled “Balance & Posture” but they are all barre exercises. It was one of my first videos posted, so it got lost and pushed aside. I love the choreography and I think you will too. Check it out, show it some love and let me know what you think! 😍https://youtu.be/K3-ceb9QhX8

  • That was a wonderful way to get back to barre. I’m 75 and I have to be careful not to hurt myself. It was gentle but my heart rate went up to 109 and I feel stronger with better posture.

    • Hi Suzy, good for you! Your feedback makes my day, I’m so glad the workout made you feel good. Thank you for the positive feedback and for working out with me!

  • I absolutely love your workouts. I have always done some form of exercise but last year I went through a hysterectomy, chemo and radiation. I couldn’t really workout and I lost everything (balance especially). I am now cancer free and I am determined to get my body back. Your workouts have gotten me on the path to doing so. I thank you!

    • Thank you for your kind words Julie. I’m thrilled that you like and are finding success with my workouts. Good for you! You should be proud! ❤️

  • It’s so wonderful to have someone as in shape as you are teaching exercise for beginners, or those just starting again after a long while out of exercise, those coming out of injury, and seniors. I find this to be very reassuring, and it encourages me and makes me want to continue on my exercise journey following being inactive for a number of years. The feeling of being met with patience, and encouragement where I am in my fitness level by someone who’s on the other end of the spectrum and very fit, rather than being looked down upon and sort of put into a different “category” by them is such an incredible motivator- it makes me feel unashamed and like it’s all worth it. I can’t tell you how I wish there were more you’s in the world of fitness! Thank you.

    • You are so welcome Colleen! Thank YOU for your supportive and kind words 😍. I love that you appreciate what I’m trying to accomplish with SeniorShape. Anyone can start or restart exercising at anytime. It’s not about being the best or looking the best, it’s about feeling better and being proud of what our amazing bodies can do! 🙌🏻

  • Thank you for telling us we did a good job, lol. It goes a long way. What a great Barre workout. I took ballet when I was a kid. After your class, I convinced myself that I am totally out of shape. But I’m coming back for more. The hip stretches were exactly what I needed. Easy to follow and pleasant to listen to. Thanks again.

    • You are so welcome Catherine! Thank you for the nice comments and I’m so glad you liked it. Once a dancer, always a dancer!

  • Thank you SO much for this – it’s excellent!!! I’m 67 and have gone through it twice – you’re direction is so clear & very helpful. Looking forward to doing your other senior workouts soon – Thanks again for your guidance!

    • Thank you Frances! I appreciate your lovely feedback. I have lots more barre videos and other videos like Pilates and strength too. 🌸

  • I was so happy to find you! At 59 I had been a bar method devotee, until my local class ceased doing any kind of beginner or dreaded should I say “senior “ bar classes. I really felt like it was the best workout I’ve ever had, but the other classes were geared for more younger flexible people I was concerned over getting hurt. I’m so tickled to recapture that feeling watching this video this morning and working out to it. Thank YOU!

    • Yay! This makes me so happy! That’s exactly what I try to do with my channel. My most common comments are along the lines of “challenging but achievable “. Make sure to check out my other videos too. And thank YOU for working out with me! 😍

  • Lauren @SeniorShapeFitness—thank you SO much for your terrific workouts–you are literally keeping our friends exercise group healthy. We had been doing group exercise classes together for quite a a few years at our community center, but Covid changed all that–during the last 18 months plus we have been getting on Zoom 3 to 4 times a week as a group; we share one of our screens and workout to your videos, in addition to Zumba videos, and other cardio. In fact, we just did this particular video this morning and loved it. We thank you and our hearts thank you. Our group ranges from younger Baby Boomers to the oldest exerciser who is 82 🙂

    • Thank you so much for sharing this Janice, I love it! It makes me so happy to know that your group is staying active and benefiting from my workouts. It is truly my pleasure! Thanks again! 🤩

  • I just loved & enjoyed this Barre workout, it was fun and had me smiling. This graceful routine made me feel like a ballerina. The moves are gentle on the body but you feel the muscles working. Looking forward to doing this one again. Thank you as always for this beautiful video! You are truly gifted and talented! I’m so glad to have found your channel! ❤️🥰

    • Thanks for your support as always Sherry. Barre is my favorite, and I’m so happy that I can share that with viewers like you! 🌸💜

    • Welcome Tina! I’m so glad you found me as well, and thank you very much for the super thanks!
