Could I have hypothyroidism? It’s a thought that’s crossed your mind, right? After all, you have the classic symptom of hypothyroidism, namely your weight loss is slow or non-existent, even though you’re eating the same, or better than you ever have.

You’ve heard that your thyroid runs your metabolism, but how does that work? And, most importantly, what can you start doing today to help your thyroid fire up your metabolism so that you can get faster weight loss results? I address all of these questions in the video and share more details in my medically reviewed blog post:

At the blog post, you can download the list of 10 foods to start eating today for a faster fat-burning thyroid.

  • FINALLY!!! An explanation of thyroid problems and solutions that is to the point and understandable.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT

  • I learnt so much from this video. I knew gluten and dairy are not good for your thyroid but not why. Now I know why I’m motivated to make the changes I need.

  • Hi your explanations are so good to understand thank you. I had blood test after 10 years and my tsh is raised but t4 is normal. I have been following your low carb diet for the past month and lost 10lbs.i am happy with that loss and want to continue and have another test in 3 months.

  • Hello, again! I just wanted to tell you that I’ve been researching diligently making my own dog food. I’ve been listening to you and your videos. I’m feeding my dog all the things, except bone and stomach products, all the things your diet recommends! Amazing!

  • I had no idea that the sucralose I was consuming was bad for my thyroid! I suffer from hypothyroidism and obesity all my life and recently my allergies have been worsening. Going to switch to Stevia and monk fruit. Thanks so much! You saved my life.

    • drjtk76 stevia is a green plant I buy & dry the leaves & crush once dried to a powder. Beware of shop bought as they whiten it. It’s really easy to grow your own. Have a listen to Barbara O Neill her & husband run Misty Mountain Health Retreat here in Aussie. Many people from around the world have been cured over many yrs our govt now are trying to close her down. Big Phama not happy with anyone who knows their bodies & the food that fixes it.

    • KenDBerryMD has lots of videos about the medical benefits of the Keto diet and intermittent fasting. Basically all carbs and forms of sugar (fruits & artificial sweeteners) turn to sugar in your body. Your body releases insulin which stores all that sugar as fat. However, eating healthy fats (olive oil, avocados, nuts, real butter, even bacon) and eliminating carbs/sugars allows your body to burn fat. Many people have been able to get off meds (blood pressure, cholesterol, even diabetic meds) and lose lots of weight.
I’ve reduced my carb intake significantly recently and have actually started losing weight that I’ve been unable to lose for decades. My main reason for starting it though was for health reasons. The weight loss is a happy side effect though.
I hope you are able to find what works for you.

  • Hi Dr. Becky, I had an overactive thyroid and I was taking carbimazole for quite a while under the instruction of my Endrocrinologist. I then had to undertake Iodine Radio Therapy and now my thyroid is underactive, which is what the goal was. I took your hypothyrodism quiz and I scored 14 on it. Here is my question, I am in the Republic of Ireland and I eat very healthily but not enough of the right foods. I have watched your video on boosting the thyroid function as I am putting on weight at an alarming rate and I can’t seem to stop! Given all this information, can I go ahead now and take the thyroid Multivitamins? I see that I cannot purchase them in the Republic of Ireland. I downloaded your list of 10 foods to eat and will be starting on them today. Thanks for your help! Jacinta

  • I have been taking synthroid for 30 years. When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism I had no symptoms what so ever other than a lump on my neck. I was about 95 lbs (5’5″ tall) and was well into my mid 30s before I got over 100 lbs. I went through early menopause (at 35) and at 45 I was diagnosed with Lupus. I ate a very poor diet as a young person with lots of sugar and starch and bad fats. I was always trying to gain weight. Now they tell me I may have immune hepatitis and have put me on prednisone. I have a mind to chuck all the pills and try managing everything through my diet. Maybe some CBD to get things balances again. In all the doctors I’ve seen in my life not one has ever mentioned the word diet.

  • Thank you! I have been dealing with thyroid issues for almost 10 years, and still find it confusing. This is the first time that anyone has actually broke it down to a simple 1.2.3 about T3.

    • Donna E Yes. T3 is the worker Bee.
      1. Is T3 being produced adequately from T4? Remember T4 is a Tyrosine molecule with 4 atoms of Iodine.
      2. Is enough T 3 getting into the cell?
      3. Is T3 getting into the cell but not actively participating in the production of ATP?

  • I can’t believe it! I’ve been taking thyroid meds for 21 years and this is the first and best information I have ever heard!!! Thank you

    • I’ve always found my Thyroid meds don’t work !!! And I put on lots of weight and feel sooo exhausted 😩 I believe a better diet is what helps my overactive Thyroid to work better 😊😊

    • Rosemary Mcgrory if u r overactive u should be losing weight not putting it on.. it’s underactive that causes weight gain.. maybe it woul help for u to try and eat healthy for me the pills work cos I have a balanced diet..

  • Very informative video with clear explanations. Thank you so much!

I do think that dairy products that come from pastured animals, rather than the mass produced dairy that most of us have access to, are much better for us. I have noticed that when I only eat dairy from my local farms where I can actually see the cows that make the yogurt that I eat, my gut and indeed my whole body feels so much better. Having said that there are people who do have a dairy allergy which is an allergy to the protein in dairy and not necessarily lactose which it seems is something not very many people know.

  • I’ve listened to this video before, but so glad it was linked in a new 2FitDocs video. Such a great explanation. Question: do the mitochondria require glucose exclusively, or is that where the ketones replace the glucose?

  • You have been a life saver! I wish I would have come across your channel years ago. I’m sure I would be a lot healthier today! However, thanks to you I am on the road to good health, making amazing lifestyle and food choices and finally feel hope!! Thank you and God bless you and your husband!

  • Hi Becky. I find your “sessions” very informative and reliable . I am a Physician Assistant and also have a Masters in Nutrition. Great go to for my patients for easy to understand approaches to nutrition as well as weight loss over 50. Thank You.

  • What she recommends…
    -tuna, salmon, sardines
    -eggs
    -chicken
    -red meats
    -leafy greens (spinach)
-nuts & seeds (Brazil nuts, flax seeds)
-CUT OUT = dairy, gluten, sugar (stevia)

Thanks for the info! I will be trying to implement the recommendations in my daily life.

    • @Karen R. Sternberg stevia is not made from sugar cane. “Stevia is a natural sweetener and sugar substitute derived from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana, native to Brazil and Paraguay. The active compounds are steviol glycosides, which have 30 to 150 times the sweetness of sugar, are heat-stable, pH-stable, and not fermentable.”

    • Spinach is detrimental, so is flax for an under-active thyroid .. dairy is high iodine so it’s good, if you choose the right things ie fermented dairy like kefir and Greek yoghurt

  • Best explanation I’ve ever heard! Thank you! Also I would like to share We’ve been on Low carb and higher healthy fats for about 9 weeks…..my lab work revealed my dosage of thyroid medication needed to be lowered from 112 mcg to 100 mcg. All the foods you mentioned we should be eating are exactly what we’ve been doing. So your informative video get’s an A+….thank you so much.

  • Thank you. I did not understand the damage I was doing to myself until I saw your video. I have Graves Disease. Had RAI done over 8 years ago and now I am trending towards having a very underactive thyroid. Bloodwork came back saying I had normal thyroid function but I was trending towards being underactive. Diagnosed as “Postprocedural Hypothyroidism”. Here’s the thing. I got my thyroid to a healthy state over 3 years ago by doing everything you said. Thing is I stopped and regained all my weight and caused my thyroid issues I’m having now. What was mind blowing is when you talked about leaky gut and dairy proteins mimicking T3. My bloodwork showed elevated proteins and I believe it is due to my poor diet. I eat alot of dairy, gluten and sugar. So basically I’m the cause of all of this. I’m so glad you explained everything so well. I understood all of it. I knew my diet was the issue but I did not understand how important it was until I saw this. Other videos tell you what to eat and what not to eat but they dont explain how it all works. To me that is more important and now I know why I have to avoid certain foods and why I should eat certain foods. Thank you so much for posting this. It has helped me more than you know.

*****Also for anyone reading this…you can lose weight while having hypothyroidism. It’s hard but possible. I lost over 60 pounds by following a healthy diet over 3 years. I also improved my thyroid function to the point where my medication had to be reduced 2 times. The issues I am having now is due to a very poor diet. Everything she says is true. What you eat is key!

  • I just wanted to say thank you Dr. Becky for your knowledge and posting this video. I watched this video over 7 weeks ago because my lab results showed I was trending towards being Postprocedural hypothyroidism. My results for my TSH test was 4.20 which was not great. Got my results back today and my levels are 0.55…which is amazing. I had faith I could improve my thyroid function naturally but not by that much. In the pass I have done it with diet but did not have a clear understanding of how that works until I saw your video. I have Graves’ disease and this is something I know that has helped me understand my disease better. Thank you so much. Also my medication has decreased which is also great! Thank you. Your video has been life changing and will be something that I will always remember and continue to use because it works! Thanks again😊!

***Also I lost 6 pounds!!*** Which is absolutely amazing with thyroid disease😊😊😊!

  • This is the best explanation about thyroids that I’ve heard. I have Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism, can that be ‘cured’ with the same ‘diet’ you’re recommending? Also, I’m curious why you consume dairy if dairy protein causes leaky gut?
