More than half of us are all-day grazers, eating for 15 hours or longer every day. We also eat the majority of our calories – more than 35% of them – at night after 6 pm. That late-night eating comes with a number of metabolic consequences. A new study shows that it actually increases hunger, reduces the calories you burn throughout the day, and leads to changes in fat tissue that make weight loss harder.

If weight loss and better metabolic health are your goals, it pays to have a strategy for handling the hours before bedtime. In this video, I share what to eat, when to fast, and a few tips to make the whole thing easy to follow, more enjoyable, and effective.

LMNT Snow Cone Recipe:
Shaved iced
¼ to ½ packet of grapefruit LMNT, (substitute other flavors)
Seltzer or other bubbly water

  • I work a pretty physical job 3 days a week, and am exhausted when I get home. I crave sugar, and have a glass of wine, eat dinner, then want more sugar. On my days off, I don’t have these cravings.

  • I find the most challenging part is just eating dinner early enough. In the summer when it stays light out so late, it’s typical to eat dinner late, sometimes around 8pm. But I need to go to bed by 10, because I get up early. I hate to sacrifice sleep… any suggestions?

  • Would it be as effective if I took the vinegar as couple hours before bed ? When I drink at bedtime I spend the night going to the bathroom!

  • I really encourage everyone to listen to what Dr. Becky just posted. I stop eating food and drinking non-water drinks at 5pm- I am in bed with lights off by 8:30pm. I have found that I sleep better and I am not coughing throughout the night (1 sign of GERD- gastroesophageal reflux disease or “heartburn”). I drink only water from after my last meal until bedtime. When I wake up at 4 am, I drink a lot of water before black coffee and my first meal of the day (on work days) is at 7:30 am but on my 4 days off my first meal of the day is between 9-11 am, I go to bed and wake up at the same time on my days off; if I know we are going out or hanging with friends, I will take a short nap during the day, fast until noon, eat again at 3 and then go out for dinner with friends and finish the last of the food by 8 pm. And again, only water after that, alcohol is not in my repertoire and hasn’t been for more than 20 years.

  • Finishing eating for the day about 3-4pm. Can’t go to bed on a full stomach, ugh with pressure side effects or acid reflux or etc. Why not eat will be active to help digest the food.

  • There are several people in my family that actually wake up in the middle of the night and eat. They are obese.
